Powdered Glazes

Glazes are ground glass mixed with pigments, opacifiers and kaolin, used to strengthen and enhance the ceramic body. They are classified by firing temperature, opacity, gloss level and the presence of crystalline effects.

Preparing the glaze suspension and applying it to the ceramic body can be done in various ways. A thinner suspension is suitable for spraying, dipping and pouring, while brush application requires a relatively thick consistency. Typically, 1 kg of powdered glaze is mixed into 500 ml of water, then adjusted as needed by adding another 50–250 ml of water.
