Barium Carbonate / 100 g
MORE INFORMATION
Barium carbonate is used as a glaze additive acting as a flux, matting agent and crystallising agent. With certain colouring oxides it produces unique colours that are difficult to obtain by other means; with zinc oxide it promotes crystal formation in matt glazes. Due to its Xn classification and the possibility of leaching to the surface, it is not recommended for dinnerware. A fritted form of barium (BaO – barium oxide) is often used for safer application.
Barium carbonate is also added to clay to precipitate soluble salts (calcium and magnesium sulphates).
